I read, Choices for Children Why and How to Let Students Decide By Alfie Kohn
In the past I have asked my students, that had higher cognitive skills, what they wanted to learn in each content area. This year, my students are adept in giving me the "deer in the headlight" look whenever I ask them any type of question. Therefore, I have not bothered to ask them what they want to learn. I'll give it a try.
